International trade is a mainstay of American business, with U.S. corporations importing nearly $2 trillion worth of products from more than 150 countries each year. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), that number is expected to triple by 2015.

While imports continue to grow, security related risks have changed the ways American companies trade. In an effort to improve the security of U.S. ports, CBP has introduced the Importer Security Filing and Additional Carrier Requirements as a direct result of the United States SAFE Port Act of 2006.

Designed to help prevent terrorist weapons from being transported to the United States, the Importer Security Filing requires importers and vessel carriers bringing cargo to the United States to electronically transmit specific information to CBP about their cargo prior to lading that cargo at foreign ports of entry. The filing must contain two carrier-provided data files and 10 importer-provided data elements - hence the commonly used name for the new reporting requirements, "10+2."
